Silver is formed predominantly in what are known as epithermal deposits. There, hot, mineral-rich bodies of water (hydrothermal fluids) circulate and transport metals from the depths to the surface. In this way silver becomes concentrated. In geological terms this process can take place astonishingly quickly, in some cases within around 50,000 years.
The world’s most significant silver reserves are today located in Peru, Australia, Russia, China and Mexico. Countries such as Poland and Bolivia also have notable deposits of this precious metal.

How high is annual silver production?

Since the end of the Second World War, worldwide silver production has seen a massive upswing. While annual production between 1900 and 1970 still fluctuated between 5,000 and 9,300 tonnes, with individual peak years close to the upper limit, a marked rise set in from the mid-1970s.
By 1986 around 13,000 tonnes of silver were already being produced, and in 2006 the figure stood at 20,600 tonnes. Production reached its previous peak in 2018 at 26,900 tonnes. Since then a slight decline has been observed: in 2022 worldwide production amounted to 25,600 tonnes and in 2023 it was 25,500 tonnes.
Germany offers a remarkable detail: as recently as 1970, with a production volume of 131 tonnes, it was among the ten largest silver producers worldwide. Yet by 1993 the Federal Republic had stopped silver mining entirely. (Source)
What is the total quantity of silver that has already been mined?
A complete historical overview of silver production is barely possible, as no systematic records existed, above all in the pre-industrial age. Compared with today’s production volumes, however, the quantities of that time were so small that overall they carry little weight.
According to estimates, around 1.74 million tonnes of silver have been extracted worldwide to date – that corresponds to about 44 billion ounces. What is alarming is that only a fraction of it still exists: merely around ten per cent of the total production volume has survived.
The reason lies above all in industrial use. Thanks to its outstanding physical properties, silver is indispensable in numerous applications. From electronics through medicine to photovoltaics, silver is frequently used. Yet at the end of a product’s life cycle the metal is often not recycled but disposed of for good.
Approaches such as “urban mining”, that is the recovery of silver from waste and landfill, do offer hope. Recovery is technically demanding and often hardly worthwhile economically, however, so that a large part of the silver already extracted remains lost for ever.

Where are there still silver deposits on Earth?

On the subject of silver deposits a clear distinction is necessary. Recoverable reserves are understood to mean those deposits that meet certain minimum physical and chemical criteria. Factors such as ore content, quality, thickness and depth of the deposit largely determine whether and to what extent silver can be extracted economically.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates worldwide silver reserves in 2025 at around 640,000 tonnes. It is notable that about 62 per cent of this quantity is accounted for by just four countries: Peru (140,000 tonnes), Australia (94,000 tonnes), Russia (92,000 tonnes) and China (70,000 tonnes). These states are likely to hold the leading positions in silver production in the coming years too.
The so-called static range, that is the arithmetical ratio between known reserves and annual production, currently stands at only 25 years for silver. That makes clear how limited the available resources are and how important a responsible approach to this precious metal is becoming.
Future prospects: will silver become scarce?
From my point of view, much suggests that silver will become scarcer in the coming years. The ratio between known deposits and current production volumes is already a clear warning signal. Added to this is the strongly growing demand from industry, particularly from solar technology and electric mobility, which increases the pressure on supply further. Demand already exceeds annual production capacity today.
For investors that sounds promising: numerous analysts expect a marked rise in the silver price over the long term. Even so, it pays to invest with caution, because future price developments depend heavily on technological developments. New materials or technical innovations that could replace silver in certain applications, as well as more efficient recycling methods, could noticeably ease the supply situation and thereby change the price dynamic.
