Silver Recycling: How Much Precious Metal Comes Back from Old Stocks

Silver is used industrially, but unlike many raw materials it is not necessarily lost: in principle it can be recovered. A silver spoon from a grandmother’s estate, an old investment coin, a discarded circuit board: all these objects contain precious metal that can find its way back into the materials cycle. But how much actually comes back? And why, despite rising silver prices, does a considerable share still end up irretrievably in the bin?

In my view a closer look at these figures is worthwhile, because they explain a great deal about the silver market and about the value of physical assets. We at BullionArt have been following the development of silver supply for more than two decades. In this article I show you what quantities recycling delivers, where the old silver comes from and what role the form of the silver plays in how recoverable it is.

How much silver comes back from recycling?

The most reliable figures come from the annual “World Silver Survey” by The Silver Institute. For 2024 the study reports a worldwide silver supply of a good one billion ounces, around 1,015 million. Of that, 819.7 million ounces came from mine production and 193.9 million ounces from recycling, which thus covered almost 19 per cent of supply (source: The Silver Institute, World Silver Survey 2025).

The dynamic is remarkable: the volume of recycling rose by about 6 per cent compared with the previous year. The decisive driver is the price. On an annual average in 2024 the silver price gained around 21 per cent, and in 2025 too the price level remained elevated. The higher the price, the more the effort of recovery pays off, and the more old silver travels from drawers and safes back to the refineries.

Worth knowing: one ounce is exactly 31.1 grams. The 193.9 million ounces of recycled silver mentioned are therefore around 6,030 tonnes of fine silver returning to the cycle from old stocks alone every year.

Why recycling does not close the gap

Impressive as the recycling figure sounds, it is not enough to cover demand. In 2024 the silver market recorded its fourth consecutive year of deficit. Demand exceeded supply by around 149 million ounces, which corresponds to about 15 per cent of worldwide supply (source: The Silver Institute).

The reason lies on the demand side. At 680.5 million ounces, industry consumed more silver in 2024 than ever before. The drivers are photovoltaics, electric mobility and the expansion of power grids. It is precisely these applications, though, that are problematic for recycling, because the silver is built in there finely distributed in tiny quantities.

This is referred to as dissipative, that is dispersing, consumption. A solar module or an electrical contact often contains so little silver that recovery is technically demanding and hardly worthwhile economically. A vivid image: while a silver bar remains almost 100 per cent recoverable, part of the silver built into high-tech products effectively disappears from the cycle.

What recycling rate is realistic?

The question of “the one” recycling rate cannot be answered, because it depends decisively on the form of the silver. In my experience this distinction is the most important point that many investors overlook.

Across all applications, only a comparatively small part of the silver consumed is actually recovered at the end of its use. Industry estimates put this in the order of about a fifth to a quarter. In modern, specialised recycling plants for high-quality electronic scrap, by contrast, the precious metal yield is very high, at around 95 per cent according to Verbraucherzentrale NRW. This enormous range is the real answer to the question about “the” recycling rate.

Important: according to the digital association Bitkom, German households are storing around 195 million discarded mobile phones and smartphones. According to a study by the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, this stock contains about 50 tonnes of silver that is so far withheld from the cycle. Anyone who hands in old devices properly makes a measurable contribution.

Where the recycled silver comes from

The old silver that arrives at the refineries has very different origins. Three sources can be distinguished in broad terms.

Private old stocks

From private households come above all silver cutlery, table silver, hollowware such as candlesticks and bowls, silver jewellery as well as old silver coins and silver bars. Often these are inherited pieces that have gone out of fashion. Common jewellery and cutlery alloys are 800, 835 and 925 silver, recognisable by the stamped hallmark.

Electronic and industrial scrap

The largest flow by volume comes from electrical devices, parts and components. Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals and is therefore found in relay contacts, circuit boards, switches and chips. Depending on the composition and age of the material, a tonne of electronic scrap contains several hundred grams to a few kilograms of silver; for mobile phone scrap the figure lies at the upper end of this range according to Planet Wissen. Added to this are industrial refining materials such as silver swarf, sputtering targets and silver-bearing punching waste.

Investment products

Investment silver also returns to the cycle, for instance when investors sell bars or coins. This flow is particularly clean, because the fineness is known and the material is homogeneous.

How silver recycling works

The actual recovery takes place in specialised refineries. The process follows a clear sequence that has proved itself over decades.

First the delivered material is weighed and sorted. The laboratory then determines the exact silver content, either from the hallmark or through chemical and technical test procedures. The value is established on this basis.

The precious metal is isolated by heating, by electrolytic processes or by chemical dissolution. Alloys are separated in the process and contaminants removed. The end product is fine silver, typically with a purity of 999 or 999.9. Silver granulate is made from this fine silver and serves as the starting material for new silver products: for bars, coins, jewellery or semi-finished goods for industry.

The decisive advantage: recovery succeeds without any loss of quality. In principle silver can go through this cycle an unlimited number of times. The precious metal contained in a bar today may have been a coin a hundred years ago and a tool before that.

Recycling instead of mining: the environmental balance

Recycling silver is not only a question of supply but also of the environment. The energy needed to extract silver-bearing ores and to separate out the fine silver using chemical and thermal processes is many times higher than reusing silver already extracted.

Research on recycling solar modules provides concrete figures: according to the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, recovering raw materials such as silver and silicon saves around 80 per cent of the electrical energy that primary production would require. Every ounce of silver recovered means less mining, lower water consumption and fewer interventions in ecosystems.

This is particularly relevant for photovoltaics, as the solar industry now consumes around a tenth of global silver production. Recycled silver relieves a strained supply chain here. Is recycling worthwhile for private individuals?

For owners of old silver the answer is usually clear: yes. Private individuals can sell old silver directly to refineries, regardless of whether it is a few grams or several kilograms. The material is analysed in the laboratory and paid for at the material value of the fine silver it contains.

You should bear the tax aspect in mind. Silver bars and silver coins that have been owned for longer than twelve months can be sold tax-free in Germany. With a shorter holding period, income tax may be payable. Different rules apply to jewellery and cutlery depending on how they are classified. What distinguishes silver art from dissipative consumption

This is where the circle closes for me. The recycling figures reward compact silver of high purity, while finely distributed silver becomes a write-off. Conclusion

Recycling is a mainstay of the silver supply. At 193.9 million ounces, it provided just under a fifth of the global supply in 2024, with the trend rising, and the precious metal passes through this cycle without any loss of quality.

How much actually comes back, however, depends crucially on the form. Bars, coins, cutlery and well-sorted electronic waste are returned almost completely, whereas finely distributed industrial silver is largely lost. This insight is also valuable for investors: silver in solid, pure form is particularly easy to recycle and can be melted down and valued again comparatively easily.
